Customers occasionally ask, reasonably, why a repair using genuine or higher-grade parts costs more than an equivalent-looking cheaper alternative they've seen advertised online. It's a fair question, and the honest answer is more specific and more interesting than "quality control," even though that's broadly true too.
What "Cheaper Part" Actually Often Means
A budget third-party screen or battery can look genuinely identical to a genuine part in a photo, and sometimes performs almost identically too, at least initially. The actual differences tend to show up over time and under specific conditions โ colour accuracy drifting, touch sensitivity behaving slightly inconsistently in certain spots, a battery that reports its charge level less accurately than a genuine one would, gradually, in ways that aren't always obvious from day one.
Why This Matters More Than People Initially Assume
A device is a tightly integrated system, and a part that's 95% as good as genuine in isolation can still cause issues precisely because it's interacting with everything else in the device that was specifically calibrated and designed around the genuine specification, not around a close approximation of it. Small mismatches compound across an integrated system in ways that aren't always obvious from a single part's specifications viewed in isolation.
The Repairs I've Seen Go Wrong From This
Batteries that degrade noticeably faster than a genuine equivalent would, screens with colour or touch issues that only become genuinely obvious after a few weeks of normal daily use, components that work initially and then fail well before a comparable genuine part reasonably would have. None of this is necessarily about a third-party part being fraudulent or outright fake โ plenty are genuinely, honestly cheaper to manufacture, and that cost difference inevitably shows up somewhere in real-world performance.
When a Cheaper Part Is Actually the Right, Sensible Call
For an older device nearing genuine end of life, where the goal is simply a bit more functional time at minimal cost rather than years of continued premium reliability, a cheaper part can be completely the right, sensible choice, and I'll happily recommend it honestly in exactly that situation. The decision genuinely depends on what the device actually needs to keep doing for the customer, and for how much longer.
What I Actually Tell Customers
I lay out the real, honest trade-off plainly rather than pushing the more expensive option automatically as a default โ what a genuine or higher-grade part buys you in longevity and consistent performance, what a cheaper part realistically saves you upfront, and which choice genuinely fits their specific situation and their device's likely remaining useful life. It's their informed decision to make once they actually understand the real trade-off, not mine to make unilaterally for them.
Why I Don't Default to Always Recommending the Expensive Option
I'd lose trust fast, and rightly so, if I pushed premium parts on every single repair regardless of whether it genuinely made sense for that specific device and that specific customer's actual situation. The honest, trust-building answer is "here's the real trade-off, here's my honest opinion for your specific case" โ not a default, one-size-fits-all upsell delivered the same way to literally everyone who walks through the door.
The Bigger Point
"Genuine parts cost more" isn't really a pricing gimmick on my end โ it reflects an honest, real difference in what you're actually getting, even when that difference isn't immediately visible on day one. Knowing that trade-off clearly lets you make a genuinely informed choice instead of just assuming, either way, that price alone tells you everything you need to know.
