I Wear a Lot of Hats — And That's Exactly How I Like It.
If there's one theme that's defined my career, it's solving problems. Technology has been my profession for more than 25 years, but along the way I've also served my community, worked across agriculture and transport, led volunteer organisations, and never stopped learning.
For more than 25 years, I've worked across almost every corner of the IT and technology industry—from repairing computers and mobile devices to building enterprise networks, developing custom software, securing critical infrastructure, designing websites, implementing cloud solutions, managing servers, and integrating emerging technologies such as AI, IoT and automation.
What drives me isn't simply technology—it's solving problems.
I've always believed that the best solutions come from understanding how things work, why they fail, and how they can be improved. Whether it's writing software, recovering data from a damaged device, designing a business network or building a custom hardware solution from scratch, I enjoy taking complex challenges and turning them into practical, reliable outcomes.
A Practical Background
Long before cloud computing and cybersecurity became part of my everyday life, I spent years working throughout the agricultural industry.
From livestock production and broadacre cropping through to aerial spraying operations, I gained a deep appreciation for industries that rely on reliability, practical thinking and getting the job done regardless of the conditions.
Agriculture taught me that technology isn't valuable because it's clever—it's valuable because it solves real problems for real people.
That philosophy still influences every project I undertake today.
Life on the Road
I've also worked professionally as a truck and bus driver, an experience that reinforced the importance of responsibility, planning and attention to detail.
Operating heavy vehicles safely requires patience, situational awareness and sound decision-making—qualities that have become just as valuable when managing complex IT projects, consulting with clients or designing critical systems.
Always Building Something
Outside of work you'll usually find me working on one project or another.
I'm an enthusiastic maker, builder and lifelong learner with interests spanning:
- 3D printing and design
- Electronics and embedded systems
- Raspberry Pi and Arduino projects
- RC aircraft, drones, cars and boats
- Amateur radio and wireless technologies
- Metal detecting and gold prospecting
- Astronomy and AllSky imaging
- ADS-B aircraft tracking
- Home automation and IoT
- Cybersecurity research
- Linux servers and self-hosted infrastructure
I'm naturally curious and love learning how things work—whether that's a new programming language, designing a custom electronic circuit or restoring a piece of old equipment.
If it can be built, repaired, automated or improved, chances are I'll have a go.
Serving the Community
Giving back to my community has always been something I've been passionate about.
For more than 10 years, I've proudly served as a volunteer firefighter and emergency services responder, attending incidents ranging from bushfires and structure fires to storm-damaged homes, hazardous material incidents, serious motor vehicle collisions, flood operations and search and rescue missions.
Those experiences have taught me lessons that no classroom ever could.
Remaining calm under pressure, making informed decisions with limited information, working as part of a highly disciplined team, and adapting quickly to rapidly changing situations are skills that transfer remarkably well into technology and business consulting.
Whether I'm troubleshooting a critical server outage or responding to an emergency at three o'clock in the morning, the approach remains the same: stay calm, assess the situation, prioritise what matters most and solve the problem safely and efficiently.
Community service hasn't stopped there.
For many years I've also volunteered within community radio, contributing both on and off the air as an on-air presenter, technical volunteer, and eventually serving as President of 2YYY Community Radio. During that time I helped support the station's day-to-day operations, technology, broadcasting infrastructure and strategic direction while helping ensure our local community continued to have access to independent local media.
Working in broadcasting combined my passion for technology with communication, leadership and community engagement—whether I was maintaining technical systems behind the scenes, presenting live programs, or helping guide the organisation's future.
Why Clients Choose Me
My career hasn't followed a conventional path—and I believe that's one of my greatest strengths.
I've worked in technology, emergency services, agriculture, transport and community broadcasting. I've repaired devices, developed software, designed business systems, built hardware, managed infrastructure, led volunteer organisations and responded to situations where lives depended on making the right decisions.
Those experiences have given me something that can't be learned from certifications alone: perspective.
When clients work with me, they're not simply engaging someone who understands technology—they're partnering with someone who understands people, organisations and the environments they operate in.
Whether that's helping a business modernise its IT, leading a volunteer committee, maintaining critical broadcast infrastructure, or coordinating under pressure during an emergency response, my focus has always been the same: listen carefully, solve problems thoughtfully, and leave things better than I found them.
Still Curious After 25 Years
Technology never stands still—and neither do I.
Whether I'm exploring the latest advances in artificial intelligence, building custom software, flying a drone, helping a local business modernise its operations, or volunteering to help my community during an emergency, I'm always learning, always improving and always looking for the next challenge.
After more than two decades in technology, one thing hasn't changed:
I still genuinely love figuring things out.
And that's why I still wear a lot of hats.
