What I Actually Use a CNC Machine for Most

People assume my CNC machine spends most of its time on big, impressive furniture builds and dramatic finished pieces, because that's what photographs well and what naturally gets shared. In actual day-to-day use, the single most common job it does for me is something far smaller, more mundane, and rarely shared anywhere at all.

The Actual Most Common Job

Small, precise jigs and fixtures โ€” purpose-built holders that keep an awkward part steady while I work on it for a repair, a custom mounting piece for a client's specific, unusual setup, a precisely-fitted spacer or guide that solves one specific, small problem in some other, larger project entirely. None of it photographs particularly well. All of it, added up across a year, genuinely outweighs the big, photogenic furniture builds in sheer practical volume of actual use.

Why This Surprised Me Too, Early On

I bought the machine with bigger, more ambitious furniture and decorative projects specifically in mind, and those projects are genuinely satisfying when they happen. But the actual return on investment, measured honestly in real time saved and real problems solved across my broader work, comes overwhelmingly from these smaller, unglamorous, purpose-built pieces that quietly make some other job easier, faster, or simply possible at all.

A Concrete, Recent Example

A repair job needed an oddly-shaped, very specific spacer to properly seat a component during reassembly โ€” nothing remotely available off the shelf anywhere, genuinely needed within the hour rather than days from now. Fifteen minutes of CAD work, a quick cut, and the actual repair could properly continue. That single, unglamorous use case alone has paid for a meaningful share of the machine's original cost across the accumulated time it's saved me on similar small jobs.

Why This Pattern Holds True Across All My Maker Tools

The 3D printer follows an almost identical pattern โ€” small functional brackets and clips dramatically outnumber show-piece prints in actual practical use, even though the show pieces get shared far more often because they're simply more visually interesting to look at. The laser cutter does plenty of decorative work, genuinely, and an equal or greater amount of small, functional templates and jigs that never make it anywhere near a photo.

What This Says About How I'd Recommend Investing in This Kind of Equipment

If you're considering a CNC machine, 3D printer, or laser cutter purely for big, ambitious showpiece projects, factor in honestly that a meaningful share of its real, ongoing value will likely come from small, unglamorous, problem-solving jobs you can't fully anticipate or plan for yet. That's not remotely a downside. It's arguably the single best, most consistent argument for owning the equipment at all, even if it's not the part you'll ever feel inclined to photograph or post anywhere.

The Honest Reframe Worth Making

I've stopped thinking of these machines as "tools for building impressive finished things" and started thinking of them as "tools for solving whatever specific, oddly-shaped problem shows up this particular week," which is a considerably more accurate and more useful description of how they actually, genuinely earn their keep across a typical year of real use.

Why I Mention This to Anyone Considering the Investment

If you're weighing up whether a CNC machine is worth the cost for your own workshop, weigh it against the small, unglamorous jobs you'd actually use it for weekly, not just the impressive project you're picturing right now. The impressive project might happen twice a year. The small, unglamorous fix is what actually justifies owning the machine the other fifty weeks.
